The Avenue
The Avenue is a fashion and culture magazine affiliated with Northeastern University. Each spring and fall, the Editorial & Creative team publishes a collection of articles, and three main photo spreads, all centered around a unifying theme.
As the Design Director, I managed the team of designers, collaborated with the Art and Creative Directors, and worked with the group of editors led by the Editor in Chief to produce the 124-page issue.
Rebrand
In Fall 2019, as I stepped into the Director role, the magazine went through a rebrand in order to refresh the look. I collaborated with the Creative Director to visually translate the new tone into a redesigned style guide that ushered in a more experimental direction to the magazine.
VOL 10
RAW
Fall 2019
This issue focused around the concept of being “RAW” – to be raw is to be unfinished, and to embrace our rough edges as space for new growth. To be raw is to be vulnerable, and to let people help us by allowing them to know us. To be raw is to be unpolished, and to laugh and cry and exist without shame. To be raw is to be human.
Vol 11
Environment
Spring 2020
The theme “Environment” centered around the idea of place. It looked at the way we occupy spaces and the way we are shaped, physically and emotionally, by the spaces we inhabit. The photography focused on scale and composition, as well as landscape, and the overall design emphasized the way the space on the page was explored.
Vol 12
Disrupt
Fall 2020
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, each of us watched the lives we took for granted disappear, suddenly transitioning to an almost fully digital life. This change was jarring and unsettling – but it also opened a door to change, to “Disrupt.” With this issue we chose to embrace disruption in all of its aspects – the good, the bad, and the ugly. While disruption can be a huge hindrance, we found that it can serve as inspiration for our best and most creative work.
Vol 13
Awakening
Spring 2021
Awakening is an acceptance towards a new reality, a reality where the Covid pandemic is not gone or “done”, but we’re starting to incorporate it more into our daily lives. With our last issue, “Disrupt,” we showcased how our reality was upended and irreversibly changed, but with “Awakening,” it’s this sense of discovery, a middle ground, of figuring out what comes next. It explores connection in an emerging from Covid world, focuses on rebirth and modernity, and exudes a mythical, almost eerie, aesthetic to mirror the almost figurative nature of the unknown in “Awakening”.
For this issue, I served as the Production Manager. As this was my final semester with the magazine, my main focus was working with my previously Associate Design Director, Liv Iriate, to transition her into the Director role. I was the liaison between our printer and our design team to ensure print production was smooth. I also worked with the editorial team, and the Editor in Chiefs to ensure more logistical and organizational goals were met (like establishing a ladder and setting deadlines based on the printer’s needs). I also continued to contribute to the design aspects of the magazine.
