Sprout Studios
Sprout partnered with Yardhaus to design the Pillar Pro
Deck System – a unique solution to a gap in the home and lifestyle market – a string light installation product, elevating outdoor living.
Yardhaus came to Sprout because of our multidisciplinary team approach. The Industrial Design team worked with the client on the design of the product itself, while my team, the Graphic Design team, focused on product research, branding, packaging, merchandising, and marketing collateral. We worked comprehensively, building the product and brand from the ground up, to get the client from the original idea to launch.
Process
Our approach began with in-depth product research including what currently existed in the market as well as the current trends and aesthetic approaches to outdoor living. and begin to build out the brand mission and tributes with key traits and levers. We identified key attributes of the brand – a premium blend of simplicity, elegance, and functionality – that would be carried throughout the product design as well as the brand design. We also worked with the client to develop naming strategies for the products that could be expanded as the brand portfolio grew.
Branding
Working collaboratively in our team and with the client, we defined and expanded the brand’s visual vocabulary, shaping the brand’s personality, and establishing its voice. While my focus was primarily on the packaging, other members of my team focused on refining the logo and wordmark. Then using the color palettes, typefaces, and other elements we had established in earlier phases with the client, we pulled it together to create the brandbook to maintain consistency as we continued to build out the brand collateral and beyond.
Packaging
We designed a comprehensive packaging system for the YARDHAUS product line, working with the ID team as they developed the structure of the package to create the visuals. For initial launch we started with the large Pillar Pro system packaging as well as the smaller individual crown Elite packaging in two sizes. Across the board we balanced the products’ shelf appeal and a premium packaging experience, with introducing these new and unique products to consumers and explaining all the technical and assembly information necessary.
One of the main challenges here came in the inside of the packaging – we were tasked with creating an instructional step-by-step for the customer to follow (think Ikea-like instructions), including creating custom illustrations of each product and consolidating the pertinent information so it wasn’t visually too busy, while still being an effective guide for the user.
Merchandiser
We also developed retail displays, further diving into the in-store presentation of the products.
We highlighted the features and benefits of the Pillar Pro system as a whole, showcasing how
the different products fit into the system. As this is most shoppers' first impressions of the brand, we wanted to capture their attention, quickly and easily communicate the benefits and maintain interest with the high end aesthetic appeal, to lead to higher engagement and ultimately,
product purchase.
